What We Paint Outside

A large Lora Bay home in Thornbury painted a single deep charcoal across siding, trim and soffits, with a stone patio and Muskoka chairs under a clear sky.

Siding and trim

Board and batten, horizontal siding, soffits, fascia, window and door trim. We prepare all surfaces carefully before applying the right material needed for the job to make sure the paint job lasts.

Stucco and masonry

Stucco and brick are surfaces that can be painted to bring a new aesthetic to your home. When painting these surfaces, you need to make sure you hire a professional company that will apply the proper coating to ensure the paint job does not crack or peel over time.

Cedar shakes

Weathered cedar shakes will split over time due to drying out. To protect these surfaces they should be stained every 3 to 10 years depending on the coating you choose. Cedar shakes stained with a transparent stain should be recoated every 2 to 3 years to avoid the need to fully sand them down. Cedar shakes stained with solid stain should last 10 years.

Decks and fences

Decks and fences require attention more frequently than wood siding and other surfaces. These surfaces should be stained every 2 to 4 years to maintain a proper coating and protection. Let us help you choose the right product for your deck or fence to ensure it is done right.

Paint or Stain?

Making sure you choose the right product for your job is imperative to its longevity. If your exterior wood has never been coated before, 99% of the time we recommend using a stain instead of a paint. Here is why.

Paint

Paint sits on top of the surface. When paint coatings start to fail in exterior conditions, you typically get lifting and peeling, making the next paint job more challenging and expensive due to the need for intense sanding and scraping during the preparation process.

  • Only used if the surface was previously coated with paint
  • Peeling and lifting occurs over time
  • Used mainly on exterior surfaces that are not wood, such as metal and aluminum

Stain

Stain soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top of it, so it will not peel. Over time, stain fades, and once you start to see knots bleeding through on your siding, it is time to give us a call! Stain comes in a variety of different opacities, and hiring a company that knows when to use a specific type of stain is critical to the final outcome and longevity of the project.

  • Will not peel or lift
  • Best for all exterior wood surfaces
  • Requires less prep next time you need to stain your house

Making sure you hire the right company who knows when to use a paint versus a stain is one of the most important aspects of an exterior paint job. Some houses need stain, some need paint, and some need both!

A Colour Drenched Exterior in Lora Bay

All siding, trim, soffits, fascia, garage doors, and man doors on the home were painted with Benjamin Moore exterior paint. All surfaces were painted the same colour to achieve a modern colour drenched aesthetic. The timber frame beams were the accent of the project, and were painted white to achieve a grand entrance into the home.

How an Exterior Job Runs

Most of the work happens before any colour goes on.

  1. Assess and prep

Prep is not equal across all jobs. Some houses need a pressure wash, some need to be sanded, and others do not need either. Before we paint or stain, we prep the home according to its specific needs.

  2. Masking and protection

When painting or staining your home or business, the last thing you want is paint or stain on surfaces that do not need it: glass, patio stones, aluminum soffits. This is why we make sure every surface that is not being painted or stained is covered and protected.

  3. Two coat process

We quote virtually all projects for two coats of paint or stain. We use only the highest quality materials and application methods to ensure your paint job looks great and stands the test of time.

  4. Customer approval

We do not leave the job site or send the final invoice until you have approved the work for yourself. At the end of the job we walk you around the property to show you the finished product. We are not finished until you are 100% satisfied.

Exterior Painting Questions

When can you paint outside around Georgian Bay?

Roughly May through October, though it depends on the year more than the calendar. Exterior coatings need surface temperatures to stay above their minimum overnight as well as during the day, so the shoulder weeks at either end get judged on the forecast rather than booked blind.

How long does an exterior repaint take?

A typical house runs one to two weeks, and the split is usually a week of prep to a few days of painting. Larger properties, or anything needing scraping back to bare wood, run longer. Your estimate carries a schedule with rain days already built into it.

Do you spray or brush and roll?

Both, usually on the same house. Open siding gets sprayed and then back-brushed or back-rolled so the coating is worked into the surface instead of resting on it. Trim, doors, and anything next to glass or stone is cut in by hand.

What happens to my landscaping?

Beds, shrubs, walkways, and anything else within reach gets covered before a drop of paint is opened, and uncovered at the end of each day so nothing sits under plastic in the heat. Windows, lights, and hardware are masked or removed.

Can you paint over cedar shakes that have gone grey?

Usually with a solid stain rather than a paint. Weathered cedar moves too much for a paint film to stay put, and stain soaks in instead of sitting on top, so it will not peel later. If the shakes have gone too far, we will tell you which elevations need sanding first.

Will you match the colour of my neighbouring buildings?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Barns, sheds, garages, and detached studios usually look best carried in the same colour as the house. On a Nottawa property we ran the home, the barn, and two sheds in the same deep stain, and the property reads as one place because of it.
